Easy Healthy Snacks for On the Go

If you’re like me and you’re at a baseball, softball, or soccer game, you don’t always want to eat whatever food the snack bar is selling and you may not want your kids to have that all the time, either. Planning ahead for healthy snack options can be easy if you have some suitable containers and some good ideas. Here are some super easy healthy snacks and some containers to make your game mornings a little easier.

goodness knows granola barsI always pack four to six granola bars in my bag no matter what length the day will be because inevitably, someone will be starving and this is a quick, healthy option that they can eat quickly or sneak into the dugout. There are so many options for granola bars now that you can have something on-hand that everyone will like. Amazon has a lot of great options for healthy granola bars without a lot of chemicals at great prices, and you can combine orders for free shipping.

cut carrotsIt can be hard to find vegetables that kids will eat, but cut carrots are always a favorite, and probably as healthy as you can get. Sometimes I forget how good they really are, especially on a hot day when you need a nice, cool snack. These are super easy to do and can be mixed in a container with other snacks.

cut celeryWho doesn’t love cut-up celery, right? I guess maybe some people don’t, but it sure is another healthy snack that you can pack that’s easy and won’t make a mess. Unless, maybe you want to add some peanut butter or cream cheese. Another item that you can mix into a container.

grapesGrapes are a favorite with our family and we pretty much have them at every game in the summer. When all else fails, my kids will always eat them and they’re one of the easiest things to bring to a game or tournament.

Diced watermelon

Probably the fruit kids love the most is watermelon. Every time I bring it to a game to tournament, it gets eaten first. Another super refreshing thing to have on a hot day.

cut canteloupeCool like the watermelon, but cantaloupe is even healthier. If you want your kids to have a healthy fruit snack, this is the one. Some kids are picky about cantaloupe (maybe because it has such a weird name) but if you can get them to eat it, Bravo!

cut pineapple

Maybe not the easiest to cut up and to serve at games, but it’s still my personal favorite fruit and we bring this often to games. If you cut it into larger rectangular pieces and put into a square container, it’s actually pretty easy. You’ll be happy you did.

bananas

By far, the easiest fruit to transport is bananas. They are healthy, delicious, and come in their own carrying case. It’s my opinion that bananas are the perfect food. The kids can even eat them with dirty hands and not get germs on them. Don’t forget the bananas!

yogurt tubesAnother item that is healthy and really easy to pack is yogurt tubes. This one of the more fun healthy snacks for kids and they love them. And, you’ll know they’re getting something that’s good for them. They’re great when it’s a hot day.

sargento colby jack cheese sticksMy personal favorite: don’t forget the cheese. Can be combined with crackers and wine. Wait, the wine is for later, just bring some crackers. If you’re looking for simple healthy snacks for kids, this is a great one, and it has its own storage container.

goldfish crackers assortmentMy kids love goldfish crackers and they come in those single-serving bags that you can buy in packages of like 500 at Costco, Amazon, or other stores. Combine these with the cheese and you have a filling snack that’s pretty healthy and keeps you away from the expensive snack bar. I never considered getting them through Amazon, but if you think about it, you can combine them with some granola bars or some other item and get free shipping, and save yourself some shopping time.

SimpleHouseware 3 Compartment Food Grade Meal Prep Storage Container BoxesThese Simplehouseware containers are really nice for bringing multiple items that you need to separate, because we all know that our kids’ foods can’t touch each other. I wanted to recommend containers that get good reviews for quality and are BPA free tupperware containers. These store nicely, fit into ice chests, and sell at a great price. These have three compartments, and they’re also microwavable and dishwasher safe. They are also leak-proof which is important for cooler transport.

square food containersIt’s always nice to have some square plastic food storage containers to bring slightly larger items such as watermelon, cantaloupe, or pineapple chunks in your cooler. This set has easy-open lids and they’re BPA free.

cooler bagThis cooler bag is a nice option for things that you don’t want to put into your ice chest, but you want to keep from getting hot. Great for items like bananas or sandwiches that might get smashed or soggy in the cooler. This one has a front pocket for your keys or cell phone, and it gets great reviews. Also doubles as a shopping bag for items you want to keep cool in the car when you’re on-the-go.

Those are great and quick ideas. It reminds me of when I was young and my mom did the same. The cheese sticks or the goldfish were my favorite! I know my cousin packs the fruit for her kids when they have sporting events. Awesome pictures definitely convey the information quite well. Nice article!

Thanks for visiting my page. Sounds like your mom was on top of the healthy snacks! 🙂

These are for sure some great simple, snack ideas, and healthy too. I used to make huge batches of cookies, yes, I know it doesn’t sound healthy, but wait……I would modify them by taking out most of the bad stuff and tossing in healthy ingredients such as wheat germ, rolled oats, walnuts and shredded carrots. And remove 1/2 of the sugar by sweetening them with honey and apple sauce. I’d make them in huge batches (and freeze some for another time) pack em up in a huge container and they’d disappear like hot cakes! Thanks for all the ideas.

Hi Carol. Healthy cookies is a great idea! I’m not much of a baker, but I’m thinking of enlisting one of the other moms to make some now that we have this idea. And, I know our kids would love them. Thanks for visiting my page. 🙂

Easy healthy snacks for on the go. I love the idea of eating more healthy especially in the days world where health is talk about so much its good I know some time we can get a little junky but then we need to know when to put down the junk food and pick that health bar or that apple or that orange up the key is to live a more healthy live style. I like the idea of a website that shows that you can go to abase ball game or any other sporting event and carry along something healthy to eat good job.

Thanks so much for your comments, Norman. Of course, we don’t have to eat healthy all the time, but it’s great to be able to give our kids some good options when they are playing sports. Athletes need good nutrition. 🙂

    Hi Shannon,

Loved the article and enjoyed the pictures of the snacks just as much because they were so clear with those vibrant colors. Looking at those pictures really made me want some fresh fruit and veggies. (:>)

When my boys were young I actually ran our community recreation boys and girls basketball program. I remember all those practices, games all day on Saturdays and the tournaments at the end of the basketball season. But, it wasn’t finished there because then I had to go through all the summer leagues!!

There were so many times I had to make sure the snacks were available. Boy, do I remember those days! Only, I didn’t think to use the containers as you have shown. I thought the large plastic storage bags were easier, but instead the fruit would get smashed, crackers and cookies would be all broken up. I guess I didn’t plan very well!

You have everything so organized. Thanks for all the snack ideas. I bet the teams are glad when it’s your turn to bring snacks!!

I really enjoyed your article. Will definitely stop by again to see what new ideas you have. I bet I can use them in ways other than at sport events.

I’m constantly looking for easy healthy snacks for on the go! I love but hate eating fast food (don’t we all) so I try to pack #1 granola bars and #2 unsalted mixed nuts. I used to do fruit but it would always get smashed and leak inside the ziplock bags. Maybe its because I am a man and never thought about this but FOOD CONTAINERS! so obvious. I really never thought about using them. Thanks for the tip!

    • Keeping kids healthy on-the-go is a huge challenge. We give in to fast food so much that I wanted to encourage people to take a few minutes to get some good snacks together. Thanks for visiting my page. 🙂

love your article on health snacks on the go, great suggestions for on the go snacks. Some I do already use, but some I never knew existed or never tried.

I eat small portions so i must eat often, this article is a great asset for me giving me more options for on the go snacks since I eat often.

I love protein bars for my favorite on the go snack, you have to be careful all protein bars are not as healthy as you might think. What is your thoughts on protein bars, which ones if any would you recommend for me

    • admin

Thanks for your comments. I would stick with protein bars that are more natural with less sugar content. You are right though…a lot of the protein bars out there are not that healthy because they have sugar and preservatives. 🙂

Wow this is a blast from the past when my mom used to do the same thing for me. I used to loathe going to baseball tournaments, but loved eating all the snacks and goodies between the games. You have some awesome and simple ideas on here. This is a very good read.
